Parent FAQs
The season & tryouts
There are two seasons a year. Short Course Yards runs from about September to February, and Long Course from about March to August. JTSC is a year-round program and we encourage swimmers to swim both seasons. There are breaks for Christmas, Spring Break and two weeks between each season.
Short course practice starts in mid-August and runs until March. It is called short course because events are usually held in a 25-yard pool (sometimes 25 meters), almost always indoors; high school and college meets are short course. Long course practice runs through the spring and summer in a 50-meter pool, the Olympic length, about 16 feet longer than 50 yards. Many long course meets are held outdoors.
Tryouts are held twice a year, before each season. Swimmers swim a distance (typically 25 yards) of each stroke: freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke. Coaches evaluate each swimmer and recommend the next step, either a club practice group or development in another aquatic program. There is no cost to try out and the first week of club practice is free.
The coaches will tell you. Grouping is determined by age and a set of progressive standards, taking into account social and emotional development as well as ability, and there may be subgroups within each group. JTSC is a technique-based program: once your swimmer masters a skill level, the coaches will not hesitate to move them up.
Practice times for the 2025-2026 school year and the 2026 summer, with the recommended number of practices for each group, are on the Practice Groups & Schedule page.
The recommended number of practices is based on the swimmer-to-coach ratio, ability, individual growth and USA Swimming's age-appropriate guidance. We understand swimming is one part of each athlete's life, and families are free to adjust for other sports, illness or family plans. Remember to keep your coach in the loop.
Fees, gear & family life
Yes. The swim club is a Jenks Community Education program that is part of Jenks Public Schools, which also operates the Aquatic Center. Daily operations are managed by the Club Program Director and Head Swim Coach, and a volunteer parent advisory committee helps plan activities. Swimmers do not have to attend or live within Jenks Public Schools boundaries. The club is separate from Jenks High School Varsity Swimming and is not an OSSAA sport.
Tuition pays for coaches' salaries, staffing, website usage, equipment and team events. The USA Swimming registration fee pays for your swimmer's USA Swimming membership. The club/pool fee helps offset the cost of running the Jenks Trojan Aquatic Center, and meet fees cover entry plus lifeguards, facilities, hospitality and awards.
For practice: a suit, goggles and a swim cap, plus a swim bag for clothes, a towel and a water bottle. Girls wear a one-piece suit; boys wear briefs or jammers. From the Advanced group up, swimmers need fins, a kickboard and a pull buoy, usually carried in a mesh bag. All swimmers wear the JTSC team suit at meets. Gear is available from the JTSC store at SwimQuik and at the Trojan Head pop-up shop in the Aquatic Center lobby, open during most practices.
Each family volunteers at least 20 hours for Short Course and 20 hours for Long Course, 40 hours a year. Hours can be worked at weekend meets, staffing the Trojan Head during weekday practices, helping plan banquets or donating food and drinks for meets, and can be served by any family member. Unfilled hours are billed at $40 an hour at the end of each season.
Club activities, meets and practice times are posted on this website. Club information also goes out weekly by email and on a closed Facebook group, so make sure your email address is on file. Check the posters and whiteboards in the pool lobby, too. Parent meetings are held in September or October and again in February or March.
